I don't know if many who are homeschooling now remember the books on Records that came out  from about mid 1940's to mid 1960's.  Along with the little story books that were on records you could also find classical music and other music.  Bible Stories, Foreign Languages (Spanish, French, German) and so much more.
I found a site that I think you will enjoy with your children.

Children's Vinyl Record Series has over 120 old records on their site that not only your children will enjoy but I think it will bring a lot of memories back or maybe even start new memories between you and your children.

To start go to http://www.artsreformation.com/records/  and you and your children can begin to enjoy what you might have enjoyed as a child or maybe Grandma can tell your children how the records worked.

Bible Based Homeschooling

When my children were 7,10 and 11 I removed them from Public School because of a lot of emotional abuse by teachers (my daughter)  and a school psychologist (my youngest son).  I always wanted to teach them with the Bible but in those days Homeschool wasn't what it is today.  We were the only people homeschooling where we lived then.  Everyone but 2 Public School teachers were totally against it.  But we saw what the Schools were becoming and we were also adamant that they were not going to be subjected to that.
Since there was only ACE and Alpha Omega that we knew of we ended up using ACE because it was what we could afford.  I did find a Curriculum somewhere in New England that used only the Bible but could not afford it at that time.  When we did have the money I wrote for a catalog and received my letter back.  They were not longer where they had been.  I never did find out what happened to them.
Fast forward 29 years and I have found a wonderful site that is offering a eBook  called " Bible Based Homeschooling: Our Experiment with Using the Bible as Our Main Textbook" by Karen Debus.  She has some freebies to download and a newsletter that you can sign up for so you can get new freebies as she offers them.
I think this is a great site.  Check it out and you might just find yourself using the Bible as your main textbook.
http://biblebasedhomeschooling.com/ebook-free/

I will try and send the Information on the Founders Bible in the next day or so.  This Bible is the Best book to use when Teaching American History from the Beginning of the United States up to about the Mid 1900's.  It has materials that you will wonder why you were not taught about all of the history it has between the covers along with the Bible.  The Bible translation it uses is the NASB and although I'm not particularly  trilled with this version I can always use my Geneva or 1611 KJV Bible for the Bible Reading itself for the verses that I don't agree with the translation.

Enchanted Homeschooling Mom

Have you ever found a site that just makes you wish you could get everything that is on it.  I have.  I get the Enchanted Homeschooling Mom's newsletter and she always has something great in it that she is giving away.  She also has a lifetime membership for downloading her materials for as long as you wish.  The cost is only $15.00.  Not much I know but if you are like me every penny counts so right now I am going to have to be satisfied with her freebies.  And they are fantastic.
Right now she is offering her Plant Journal for free.  All you have to do is go about 1/4 of the way down on her main page and click on the link for her " Spring Into Learning with 35+ FREE Spring Printables Round Up"   and look for the free Plant Journal.  It's 17 pages long with 30 days of pages to record what your plants look like from the day you plant the seed to day 30.  You could also use the journal pages ever 2-3 days so that you have a bit more time to record your plant changes.  But remember the old saying  "A watched pot will not boil" so have your children go slow so they are not disappointed with their plant.
To go to the site just click on the link and look around.  You will find a lot of materials that you will enjoy for your children from Kindergarten to 5th grade.
If you would like to get her freebies you will need to sign up for her newsletter but you will not be overwhelmed with them.

Passover is Next Week

Although I have 2 items that are not for Passover today I do think that  you will enjoy everything here today.  A set of math textbooks from 1922 and a free chart on the similarities between King David and Jesus the Messiah.  The rest are some great materials on teaching about the Jewish holiday of Passover
Enjoy your learning

“Passover for Christian Families is a unique way to help your family celebrate the life of Jesus. Passover is a holiday first celebrated by the children of Israel to help them remember their miraculous deliverance out of the hands of the wicked Pharaoh to freedom. Traditionally, a special meal was shared by the family and the story of God's deliverance is retold. The Israelites looked forward to a time when a Savior would come to them to deliver them from spiritual bondage to freedom. Jesus was that "Passover lamb." He came to the world and delivered us from sin and spiritual death. His sacrifice is what makes us spiritually free!”

Let your children enjoy the stories you did.

Do you remember the stories on records that they had in the 50's and early 60's?  Did you think that they were gone for good?  Well you can get them online.
There is a site called Kidde Records where you can get the records divided  into the 4 years that they started this site.  2005,2006,2007 and 2009 Christmas Records, New additions, More Golden Age Classics, Long Playing Records, and More Golden Classics.
I counted the ones I could (they are working on the 05,06,07 and 08) and I was unfortunately able to check how many they had in the 07 file because that one is still down.  You can see the records that will be in the years of 05-06 and 08 but will not be able to download the records because they had a problem and they are having to put all the records back up.  So the number of records that I came up with was 578 and there will be about 50-70 in the 07 file when they get it back up.
There is a charge of $9.99 for a life time membership and you will be able to get the stories and music we used to listen to as children without having to worry about it.
To check out Kidde Records weekly go to:

Win with the Christian Homeschool Hub

If you are like a lot of homeschoolers today you depend on the Internet to find your materials for your children.  No matter if you are buying Curriculum or getting all your materials from the internet you will want to check out the Christian Homeschool Hub.  This is a site you will need to pay to join but the subscription price is $25 per year and your membership price will never go up.  Or maybe you would like to buy a lifetime membership to the site.  The cost for that is only $99.  I know I have always said ONLY $99 but if you consider how old your child(ren) are and how much longer you will be homeschooling the cost will come out to the following:
Preschool:  $6.60 per year                          Kindergarten:  $8.25 per year
1st Grade:  $9.00 per year                          2nd Grade        $9.90 per year
3rd Grade:  $11.00 per year                       4th Grade         $12.38 per year
5th Grade:  $14.15 per year                       6th Grade         $ 16.50 per year
7th Grade:  $ 19.80 per year                      8th Grade         $24.75 per year
If you have a 9th grader and above then you should probably buy the yearly subscription each year.  Now if you have 2 or more children you will need to divide the cost each year by the number of children you are teaching each year.
Of course you can sign up for the newsletter and in each newsletter you will get at least one item free.
Now that I have gotten all the money information out of the way you will want to know what kind of materials you can get.
There are 19 different categories and I would say that there are approximately 2500 + different items to download from the site.  In cost alone you are saving thousands of dollars.  Do you like the Old Textbooks.  Like McGuffey Readers, Rays Arithmetic and Harvey's English Series.  I would love to be able to get the Spenserian penmanship   Hint, Hint Linda.  ;0)
But you can get more than that.  Lapbooks, Notebooks and more.  Because of the amount of items that are on the site I can't list them all.
If you want to check out the site go to:  http://christianhomeschoolhub.spruz.com/

Link that will give and give and give

Have you ever found a site that you start downloading and you keep downloading and downloading and downloading more.  Well I found that site today.  Actually I have known of the site for some time and have always loved what I got there but today I did some searching and I was blown away by what I found.  If you have small children then be prepared to save and to keep saving and make sure you have enough ink to print all that you find.

What is this paragon of sites?  It's a simple name 1+1+1=1.  I found out that they are a Inner city Missionary Family here in America.  They are a family of 5 Dad, Mom and 3 children.  and when you read about why they named their site and blog 1+1+1=1 you will find that you agree with them.   As a retired missionary (or I should say retired from Active work on the mission field her in America) I love that they care enough to share their materials with others.  They are a Blessing from God for the Homeschool community.

If you would like to see their site and what had me saving for the past 6 hours go to the Just Color section of their site and then go on further until you can't go on any further.
http://www.1plus1plus1equals1.com/JustColor.html

When your finished go and sign up for their newsletter.  You will enjoy it.

This link is one for everyone.
Provided By Sheri Graham these materials are the perfect thing to teach the Bible to your children.  It has everything you need to teach the Bible.  It is copybooks for each book of the Bible.  Your child will learn the Bible by writing each book out in their own handwriting.  The eBooks are free.  Information for paperback books are also at the link.

There are eBooks for each book of the Bible, making this a wonderful resource for you and your kids to use copying the Bible.  Why not try to copy a book of the Bible this summer with your children.
Something I learned in my Bible studies is the fact that the Kings of Israel had to copy the whole Tenach [the first five books of the Bible] before they could be crowned?  Learn the Bible in a whole new way.

I hope that you enjoy these printables  and while you are on Sheri's site why not go and check out her other materials both free and those that cost.  Her prices and reasonable and you will enjoy the materials.

We have had a lot of things going on the past couple weeks.  I caught a sinus infection and my daughter got really sick.  The sad thing about her being sick was she got sick on her birthday.  Her brother was going to take her out to a nice restaurant and so that did not happen.
I hope everyone is doing well and keeping away from the bugs.  Today I received the Homeschool Freebie of the Day newsletter.  I am putting it below so if you are looking for a great elementary Science program to use for your child(ren) then take a look at this one.  It is a large file so they are providing one part each day this week.  I have the book and it is fantastic.  This book is the Giant Handbook of Nature and will let your child enjoy science.

Homeschool Freebie of the Day

Well, every couple of years, because so many folks keep asking for it, we repeat one of the most popular series of resources we've offered on our site.

If you are new to Homeschoolfreebieoftheday or just missed it before, be sure to get your copies this time around and see just what a wonderful treasure-trove this is:

THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY

This is a HUGE (940 pages) and absolutely wonderful teaching guide full of hundreds of nature study lessons, activities and discussion questions.  It is a complete multi-year nature study curriculum that you can use for years to come. It is so big (over 100 Megs in size) we divided it into six manageable PDF eBooks for you.

Here's the rundown for this week:

Monday, March 17th: “THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART I - TEACHER'S GUIDE & OVERVIEW” plus “THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART II - BIRDS & FISH”

In PART ONE, you get a very helpful and practical teacher's guide, including an overview of the purpose, scope and style of the handbook... how each lesson is set up... what nature study should do for your children... how to tie math, art, geography, gardening, agriculture & science into your nature study, and more.  Each lesson begins with a "teacher's story" which can be read to students along with suggested activities & methods, followed by great discussion questions.

In PART TWO, we jump into the actual lessons, this time devoted to birds & fish. As you'll quickly see, these lessons are wonderfully written, blending history, humor, a bit of poetry, and a delightful sense of wonder into these nature studies.

Then, over the rest of the week, we'll bring you the balance of this great book:

Tuesday, March 18th: THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART III -AMPHIBIANS, REPTILES & MAMMALS

Wednesday, March 19th: THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART IV - INSECTS & INVERTEBRATES

Thursday, March 20th: THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART V - PLANTS AND TREES

Friday, March 21st: THE GIANT HANDBOOK OF NATURE STUDY, PART VI - EARTH, WATER & SKY

Check these out and see why we decided to devote the full week to bringing you this excellent study resource curriculum one more time! It is wonderful.

You can find each of these resources on their respective days at:

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

I was watching a Christian program on Our local Christian station a couple days ago and they had a program by the man who wrote the book "The Harbinger"  he was telling how the book came to be written and at the end he said that if  we would pray 1 Chronicles 7:14  and I mean if the "True Christians" would pray this verse then our nation would be healed.  I had the urgent need to create some prayer cards with the Scripture in 3 different versions and a picture to send it to all I know.  I am sending it to you first so that I can get your honest opinion on these prayer cards.  You ladies are so talented you can tell me what I can do to make these cards better to share with others.

Note from the Erskine family:

I'm one of "those" people who buys cars used and holds on to them forever.  Doesn't matter what it looks like, what it sounds like, or what it smells like... just as long as it gets me where I want to go.  I'll keep it as long as possible, until it rolls over and dies on me.   Well, that's just about to happen... and of course right at the worst time.  Despite plenty of TLC, our faithful old Chevy is leaking, peeling, has lost its heat and air, grinds when you start it, shakes when you drive it, and wheezes and shudders like an asthmatic old geezer.  Susan is embarrassed to be seen in it (and I don't blame her).  It is time to put this poor vehicle out to pasture and get something  new (well, new to us anyway).  Unfortunately, with taxes coming up and some major bills to be paid, we don't have the funds we need for a new(ish) vehicle available.                                   So...we've thought long and hard on how to raise the funds we need,  and finally decided to put on an                old-Fashioned, barn-burning   FIRESALE -- STARTING TOMORROW MORNING!  What that means for you:                                                     You'll be able to pick up a whole bunch of our bestselling homeschool and homemaking resources at                  ROCK-BOTTOM PRICES (our lowest prices on ever) AND you'll be helping US out in the process.  You can get just one or get 'em all...  whatever works best for you.  Everybody wins.                                                                                                                                      We'll email the link to you early Tuesday morning, so be sure to watch your inbox for that email.   Or just head over to our site in the morning and you'll also see the link there.                                                                                                                                         Note: Very Limited quantity on some items...                                                                                                                                     There's a huge selection of both downloadable & physical resources included in the FIRESALE, but only a very limited supply of the CD collections & books. You'll want to check those out early on and grab what you want before they sell out (which they will, at these prices).                                                                                                                                                                              Again, look for the link in your inbox tomorrow morning  ... or go to our site at  http://www.homeschoolfreebieoftheday.com   tomorrow and get ready to see some amazing deals.                                    Write a note to yourself, tie a string around your finger, whatever it takes.  You really don't want to miss this!    See you then!

Old Classics

I don't know about other people but I don't really care for Television.   I much prefer to listen to the Old Time Radio Shows that were started in the 1920's.  Usually in the 20's up to about the mid 1930's they were basically news reports and Presidential  talks or activities  and sports event's in the cities and towns were the stations were situated.  But the Music was fantastic.  I love the music up to about 1949.  Classical and the music of the early to mid 1900's.
I had lost a site that I had gotten old 1900-1920's music and I was a bit upset.  When I went to put some OTR (Old Time Radio shows on a MP3 for my youngest son I found some of the music on my computer and the rest as they say is history.
If you like to use the OTR for your children as you homeschool or if you enjoy it just for the fun of listening then I suggest you go to 2 different sites.  The first is Botar which has Old Time Radio and the Old Music from the early 1900's and the second is Kiddy Record Weekly.  Although Kiddy Record Weekly is not technically Old Time Radio if you have young children they will enjoy the Old "Little Golden Book" stories that we had when we were little.  We got the book and a record to listen to the book at the same time.

You can find these two sites at

Botar  http://www.botar.us/

Kiddie Records Weekly   http://www.kiddierecords.com/

I hope that you will find these as enjoyable as my son and I find these two sites.  As I go through my links I will find more sites where you can find Old Time Radio sites where you can listen or where you can download these wonderful old stories and songs.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

My Daughters birthday is only 2 1/2 weeks away.  I traditionally make her a pineapple upside down cake.  Now most of you know how to make a upside down cake yet I don't know where I got my recipe but I would say it probably came from my husbands Aunt Nell.
If you like pineapple upside down cake why not try it this way.  It is delicious.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

1 Duncan Hines Yellow Butter Cake

Or

Your Favorite Butter Cake Recipe

1 large can crushed pineapple

1/2 - 1cup brown sugar

1 stick Butter

Melt the butter in the largest cast iron skillet you have.  (If you don’t have a really big one take and melt half of the butter, and brown sugar in one skillet then melt the other half in another skillet.  Add the pineapple to your pan or divide in the 2 small skillets.

Mix the cake mix or your favorite yellow butter cake recipe and pour over the brown sugar mix.  Bake in a 350˚ F. oven until cooked through.  I use a stick used for shish kabob.

Place a large plate over your pan and flip the cake onto the pan.

Let cool for about 30 – 45 minutes before eating.

Delicious.
